The Basics

What Is DPIIT / Startup India Recognition?

DPIIT recognition is an official startup status from the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade. It is granted under the Government of India’s (central government schemes) Startup India programme. Think of it as the door key: once your startup is recognised, you can apply for a set of funding, tax, and compliance benefits that are closed to everyone else.
One rule is important. So recognition is always the first step. Recognition stays valid for up to 10 years from the date of incorporation.
Answer capsule: DPIIT recognition is the official Startup India status that unlocks the Seed Fund, the 80-IAC tax exemption, the patent rebate, self-certification, and government tenders. You must be recognised before you can claim any benefit.

What Recognition Is Worth: A Worked Example

Numbers make the value clear. This is an illustration, not a promise, and your actual figures depend on your accounts. Say your recognised startup turns profitable and earns ₹1 crore of taxable profit in a year.

80-IAC exemption

You can claim a 100% exemption on that profit for 3 chosen years. At an illustrative 25% tax rate, that is roughly ₹25 lakh saved per year, up to about ₹75 lakh across the 3 years.

Seed Fund

Before that, up to ₹20 lakh as a grant to build and validate your prototype.

Patent rebate

Up to 80% off the filing cost when you protect your idea.
